BYLAWS OF THE INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF PSYCHOSEXUAL THERAPISTS

Article I: Objectives
1.1 The objectives of the International Association of Psychosexual Therapists are dedicated to advancing the field of psychosexual therapy as a science and profession. The primary goal is to promote overall health, education, and human welfare by fostering the broad and inclusive development of psychosexual therapy. This is achieved through:
- 1.1.1 Encouraging and supporting all aspects of psychosexual therapy with a systematic and comprehensive approach.
- 1.1.2 Promoting and enhancing research endeavors within psychosexual therapy while refining research methodologies and conditions.
- 1.1.3 Elevating the proficiency and value of psychosexual therapists by upholding high standards in ethics, conduct, education, and professional accomplishments.
- 1.1.4 Establishing and upholding the utmost standards of ethical conduct among the Association's members.
- 1.1.5 Expanding and disseminating knowledge in psychosexual therapy through gatherings, professional interactions, reports, papers, discussions, and publications.
1.2 By pursuing these objectives, the Association aims to further scientific interests and exploration and to apply research discoveries effectively for the enhancement of health, education, and the general welfare of the public.
Article II: Membership
2.1 Membership Categories
The International Association of Psychosexual Therapists consists of three membership categories: Certified Members, Standard Members, and Student Members.
2.2 Certified Members
Certified Members are qualified professionals who meet rigorous educational and clinical standards, upholding excellence in psychosexual therapy as a science and profession.
2.2.1 Minimum Criteria for Certified Member Status
Certified Membership may be obtained through one of the following pathways:
2.2.1.a Pathway 1: Accredited Program Completion
- Submit a completed application, including documentation of their educational and clinical experiences through an IAPST-accredited program.
2.2.1.b Pathway 2: Self-Study and Supervision
- Complete a recommended reading list provided by IAPST as a foundation for knowledge assessment.
- Obtain fifty (50) hours of clinical supervision under an IAPST-approved supervisor, verified by documentation.
- Pass a Certification Board Interview with the IAPST Certification Committee, similar to a doctoral defense or professional licensing review..
2.2.2 Additional Requirements for Both Pathways
All Certified Members must:
- 2.2.2.a Affirm legal capacity to engage in clinical practice within their jurisdiction, adhering to applicable laws and guidelines governing psychotherapy.
- 2.2.2.b Commit to and adhere to the IAPST Code of Ethics.
2.2.3 Designation
Certified Members are entitled to use the title Certified Psychosexual Therapist™ and the post-nominal letters C-PST™ following their name, signifying their professional qualifications and commitment to the field.
2.2.4 Requirements for Maintaining Certification
To retain Certified Member status, individuals must fulfill the following ongoing requirements:
- 2.2.4.a Adherence to Code of Ethics: Certified Members must uphold and adhere to the IAPST Code of Ethics in all professional conduct, ensuring integrity and accountability within their practice.
- 2.2.4.b Continuous Membership: Certified Members are required to maintain active yearly membership with IAPST. Lapses in membership may result in a suspension of certification status.
- 2.2.4.c Continuing Education (CE) Requirements: Certified Members must complete a minimum of five (5) hours of IAPST-approved Continuing Education (CE) annually. This ensures that members stay current with advancements in psychosexual therapy and maintain the high standards of knowledge and competency expected by IAPST.
2.3 Associate Members
Associate members are individuals who are advancing psychosexual therapy as a science and profession but have not met the criteria for certification or who have chosen not to apply for certification through the International Association of Psychosexual Therapists. They enjoy all rights and privileges of the Association, except voting for or holding office on the Executive Committee.
2.3.1 Minimum Criteria for Associate Member Status
Applicants for Associate Membership must:
- 2.3.1.a Submit a completed Associate Member Application.
- 2.3.1.b Hold a doctoral degree in a clinical discipline or a graduate degree allowing psychotherapy practice.
- 2.3.2.c Engaged in clinical practice specializing in psychosexual therapy or actively involved in research or instruction within a relevant field at a recognized and accredited institution of higher education.
- 2.3.2.d For clinical practitioners, provide a signed declaration of legal eligibility for clinical practice within their jurisdiction.
2.4 Student Members
Student Members are individuals actively enrolled in accredited and recognized institutions of higher education, specifically in programs with a focus on psychosexual therapy or related fields. They are granted the rights and privileges of the Association, including the ability to vote and participate in committees or roles designated exclusively for student members, fostering their development and professional involvement within the IAPST.
2.4.1 Minimum Criteria for Student Member Status
To qualify as a Student Member, individuals must meet the following requirements:
- 2.4.1.a Submit a completed Student Member Application.
- 2.4.1.b Submit proof of enrollment in an academic program at an accredited and recognized institution of higher education.
2.5 Fellow Status
The Association may confer Fellow Status upon members who have made outstanding contributions to the field of psychosexual therapy. For the purposes of these bylaws, the term "Member" includes “Fellows” unless explicitly specified otherwise.
2.5.1 Fellows
Fellows are distinguished members committed to advancing psychosexual therapy as a science and profession, meeting criteria that reflect their dedication and contributions. Fellows enjoy all rights and privileges within the Association without restriction.
2.5.2 Minimum Requirements for Fellow Status
To qualify for Fellow Status, candidates must meet the following requirements:
- 2.5.2.a Possess a doctoral degree in a clinical field specializing in mental and behavioral health from an accredited institution.
- 2.5.2.b Hold the title of Certified Psychosexual Therapist™.
- 2.5.2.c Have at least one year of active involvement with the IAPST.
- 2.5.2.d Show consistent, active engagement in advancing the field of psychosexual therapy.
- 2.5.2.e Have a minimum of five years of professional experience post-doctorate.
- 2.5.2.f Demonstrate exceptional contributions or performance within the field of psychosexual therapy.
2.5.3 Nomination and Approval of Fellows
Certified Members may nominate candidates for Fellow Status. The Membership/Certification Committee evaluates nominations and submits approved candidates to the Executive Committee for final approval.
2.5.4 Announcement of Fellows
New Fellows are formally recognized at the Association's Annual Conference.
2.6 Inactive Membership
Members who do not renew their membership within the designated renewal period will be classified as inactive members. Inactive members lose access to the privileges and benefits provided to active members (see Article 2.8).
2.7 Resignation
Resignations from Certified Members, Standard Members, or Student Members are accepted by the Executive Committee, except in cases where the member is under review by the Ethics Committee.
2.8 Reapplication for Membership
Former members may reapply for membership, provided they are not currently under review by the Ethics Committee.
Article III: Code of Conduct and Disciplinary Action
3.1 All Certified, Associate, and Student Members are expected to uphold the highest ethical standards and conduct themselves in a manner that preserves the integrity of the Association within the field of psychosexual therapy. Conduct that breaches ethical principles or damages the Association’s reputation may result in disciplinary action.
3.2 Allegations of misconduct shall be referred to the Ethics Committee. The Ethics Committee is responsible for establishing and enforcing rules for disciplinary procedures, which are subject to approval by the Association's Executive Committee.
3.3 Former members may reapply for membership after a specified period, provided they demonstrate restored ethical and professional qualifications. Reapplication will require review and recommendation by the Ethics Committee, with final approval by the Executive Committee.
3.4 Resignations from Certified, Associate, or Student Members are typically accepted by the Executive Committee. However, if a member is under investigation by the Ethics Committee due to allegations of misconduct, the acceptance of their resignation will be subject to review and decision by the Ethics Committee.
Article IV: Member Rights and Protections
4.1 All Members and Fellows of the International Association of Psychosexual Therapists shall possess the right to vote, hold office, and seek fair consideration for governance roles within the Association in accordance with their membership status. Voting in any Association election may be conducted in person or by electronic means.
4.2 Every Member and Fellow shall be accorded respect and treated without discrimination based on race, national or ethnic origin, religion, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, or mental or physical disability.
4.3 Any individual Member or group of Members who believes that their rights under this Article, or any other rights, have been infringed upon by actions of any part of the Association's governance structure or by any Association employee(s), may seek recourse through procedures established by the Council of Representatives.
Article V: Membership Dues
5.1 The annual Association dues shall be determined by the Membership and Certification Committee and approved by the Executive Committee.
5.2 Nonpayment of dues after thirty (30) days shall be considered equivalent to a voluntary resignation (see Article 2.6) from the Association.
5.6 Members, including Fellows, Certified Members, or Associate members aged seventy (70) or older and retired, qualify for a fifty percent (50%) annual dues reduction. Such members shall retain all rights and privileges.
5.7 Any member adjudged as totally and permanently disabled, with appropriate documentation, shall be exempt from annual dues. Such members shall maintain all other rights and privileges within the Association.
Article VI: Executive Committee
6.1 The Executive Committee comprises voting members, including the President, Vice President, Executive Officer, Recording Secretary, Treasurer, Founding President, Member-at-Large, and President-Elect. Additionally, non-voting honorary Committee placement is granted to the Student Representative. All members, except the Founding President, shall continue in their roles until their successors are duly elected and assume office.
6.2 Regular meetings of the Executive Committee shall convene at least quarterly at times and locations determined by a vote among the Committee members. The Board shall establish a mechanism for the timely resolution of issues that arise.
Article VII: Powers and Functions of the Association & Executive Committee
In alignment with the Objects of the International Association of Psychosexual Therapists, and without extending beyond or deviating from those Objects, the Association and it’s Executive Committee hold the authority:
- 7.1 To serve as a central entity for consultations on matters of educational or public interest regarding psychosexual therapy.
- 7.2 To promote, endorse, and oversee education, training, and clinical standards within the principles, practice, and expertise of psychosexual therapy.
- 7.3 To maintain and disclose a register of members encompassing their qualifications, appointments, and experience.
- 7.4 To institute and oversee systems for accrediting and/or registering counselors, therapists, supervisors, trainers, and other individuals, organizations, or activities associated with psychosexual therapy as deemed appropriate.
- 7.5 To acquire and lease approval for the utilization and assignment of the trademarked title Certified Psychosexual Therapist™ and the post-nominal letters C-PST™.
- 7.6 To establish services beneficial to the public and members, fostering their interests and enhancing members' efficiencies, skills, knowledge, and abilities within the psychosexual therapy profession.
- 7.7 To accept donations or transfers of money or any property, regardless of any specific trust.
- 7.8 To fundraise, ensuring compliance with relevant statutory regulations and refraining from substantial, enduring taxable trading.
- 7.9 To acquire, lease, exchange, hire, or otherwise obtain and possess any real or personal estate.
- 7.10 To manage, modify, or equip for utilization of any real or personal estate.
- 7.11 To construct, maintain, enhance, or alter any buildings under the Association's current interest.
- 7.12 Subject to legal consent to sell, lease, or otherwise dispose of all or part of the Association's real or personal estate.
- 7.12 Subject to legal consent to borrow or raise money, offering security for loans or grants.
- 7.13 To offer financial grants or loans, provide guarantees, or offer security for contract performance.
- 7.14 To collaborate, including information exchange and advisory support, and to establish arrangements with other bodies—international, national, local, or otherwise.
- 7.15 To create or support charitable trusts, associations, companies, institutions, or other bodies aligned with the charitable purposes within the Objects.
- 7.16 To merge with or acquire any other charity aligned with the Objects.
- 7.17 To engage in partnerships, joint ventures, or agreements with bodies sharing similar objectives, wholly or partially aligned with the Objects.
- 7.18 To affiliate with or accept affiliation from bodies sharing similar objectives, wholly or partially aligned with the Objects.
- 7.19 To reserve funds for specific purposes or as reserves against future expenditures adhering to a documented reserves policy.
- 7.20 To hold the Charitys’ investments or property in the name of a nominee, controlled by the Executive Committee or a financial expert under their instructions, and to pay any reasonable fees required.
- 7.21 To insure and arrange various types of insurance covering the Association, its assets, property, employees, volunteers, or members, as necessary.
- 7.22 To provide indemnity insurance covering the Executive Committee or any officer of the Charity, excluding specific liabilities outlined in the provisions.
- 7.23 To employ and remunerate individuals to supervise, organize, conduct, or advise the Association.
- 7.24 To engage in contracts providing services on behalf of other bodies.
- 7.26 To establish and run an Annual Convention of the Association at a time and place to be determined by the Executive Committee. Joint meetings with related societies shall be subject to the approval of the Executive Committee.
- 7.27 To establish subsidiary companies aiding or serving as agents for the Charity.
- 7.28 To disseminate information through publications, exhibitions, meetings, lectures, classes, seminars, courses, or in collaboration with other entities.
- 7.29 To produce, circulate, and distribute written, printed, or electronic materials, including periodicals, magazines, books, leaflets, documents, films, recorded tapes, or electronic media materials.
- 7.30 To foster and conduct research related to the Objects and disseminate research outcomes.
- 7.31 To act as a trustee for any trust.
- 7.32 To make charitable donations in cash or assets.
- 7.33 To seek legal authority or support, advocate legislative measures, and petition public entities affecting the Association’s interests.
- 7.34 To use the Association’s funds to cover costs related to the formation, registration, or other incidental expenses associated with the Charity as a company and charity.
- 7.35 To do all such other lawful things as are calculated to further the Objects, or any of them, or are incidental or conducive to doing so.
Article VIII: Nominations and Elections
8.1 Each year, the Election Committee will send a notice to all voting members of the Association requesting nominations for the staggered positions of the Executive Committee. Electronic nomination ballots will be distributed to the membership forty-five (45) days before the annual conference. These ballots will have space for members to list at least three names in order of preference. Following this, the Committee will create a final election ballot that includes the names of the three individuals receiving the highest number of nominating votes for each position.
8.2 The Election Committee shall assess the eligibility of nominees and confirm their willingness to stand for office. In cases where any nominee is deemed ineligible or unwilling to stand for office, the name of the next-ranked person from the preferential count shall be substituted.
8.3 The election of new committee members will occur on the first day of the annual conference. Members who are unable to attend the annual conference may cast their votes through electronic ballots, which will become available ten (10) days prior to the annual conference. Proxy votes will not be accepted.
8.4 Winners of the election will be announced during the annual conference.
Article IX: Terms of Office
9.1 The terms for elected executive board positions shall be staggered to ensure continuity in leadership and organizational stability, including President, Vice President (VP), Executive Officer, Treasurer, Recording Secretary, Member at Large, and President-Elect.
9.2 The election process for each position shall be conducted in accordance with the provisions outlined in these bylaws.
9.2.1 In the first year of the term cycle:
- 9.2.1.a Elections shall be held for the positions of President and Secretary.
- 9.2.1.b Elected individuals shall serve a three-year term in their respective roles.
9.2.2 In the second year of the term cycle:
- 9.2.2.a Elections shall be held for the positions of Vice President (VP) and Member at Large.
- 9.2.2.b Elected individuals shall serve a three-year term in their respective roles.
9.2.3 In the third year of the term cycle:
- 9.2.3.a Elections shall be held for the position of Treasurer and President–Elect.
- 9.2.3.b Elected individuals shall serve a three-year term in the role of Treasurer and President–Elect.
9.3 Outgoing executive board members shall provide support and transition assistance to newly elected members to ensure a seamless transfer of responsibilities.
9.4 The staggered terms aim to maintain consistency in the executive board while allowing for new perspectives and ideas to be integrated into leadership over time.
9.5 The terms for newly elected executive board members shall commence at the conclusion of the annual meeting following their election.
9.6 This article is subject to any additional provisions outlined in these bylaws regarding the election process, eligibility criteria, and voting procedures.
9.7 Members of the Executive Committee, through procedures outlined in the Association Rules, shall serve a three-year term and may not serve more than 2 consecutive terms.
9.8 In the event of a President's death, disability, resignation, or removal, vacancies shall be filled following procedures outlined in the Association Rules.
Article X: Committees
10.1 The Association establishes the following committees: Bylaws, Ethics, Membership and Certification, Education, Publications, and Student.
10.2 New committees may be formed upon the request of members or when deemed necessary by the Executive Committee, with approval through a majority vote of the Executive Committee.
10.3 Committee members serve alternating two-year terms to ensure continuity and stability within the committees.
Bylaws Committee responsibilities (10.4)
10.4 The Bylaws Committee is entrusted with the crucial task of overseeing and managing the bylaws of the organization by:
- 10.4.1 Regularly review the existing bylaws to ensure they align with the organization's objectives, mission, and legal requirements.
- 10.4.2 Propose amendments or revisions to address any identified gaps, inconsistencies, or changes in the organization's structure or operations.
- 10.4.3 Ensure that the bylaws comply with applicable laws and regulations governing the organization's jurisdiction.
- 10.4.4 Evaluate and consider proposed changes or amendments to the bylaws submitted by members, the Board, or other committees.
- 10.4.5 Strive to maintain clarity and consistency in the language and structure of the bylaws, making them accessible and understandable to all members.
- 10.4.6 Keep detailed and up-to-date records of all proposed changes, amendments, and revisions to the bylaws.
- 10.4.7 Communicate proposed changes to the membership, providing adequate time for review and feedback before any official vote.
- 10.4.10 Clearly outline and manage the process for proposing, reviewing, and approving amendments to the bylaws.
- 10.4.11 Maintain an organized and secure system for storing and retrieving historical versions of the bylaws.
Ethics Committee responsibilities (10.5)
10.5 The Ethics Committee is entrusted with the critical role of upholding and overseeing ethical standards within the organization. Their primary responsibilities include:
- 10.5.1 Develop, maintain, and periodically review a comprehensive Code of Ethics for the organization, outlining the expected standards of conduct for members
- 10.5.2 Provide guidance to members regarding ethical dilemmas, conflicts of interest, or other issues related to ethical conduct within the organization.
- 10.5.3 Establish and manage a fair and confidential process for receiving, investigating, and resolving ethics-related complaints against members.
- 10.5.4 Offer educational resources and training programs to promote awareness and understanding of ethical standards among members.
- 10.5.5 Make recommendations to the Board for updates or improvements to organizational policies and procedures that impact ethical considerations.
- 10.5.6 Uphold strict confidentiality in handling all ethics investigations and proceedings matters.
- 10.5.7 Ensure that ethical standards align with legal requirements, seeking legal counsel when necessary.
- 10.5.8 Provide a forum for members to seek confidential consultation on ethical matters or concerns.
- 10.5.9 Recommend disciplinary actions to the Board in cases where ethical violations are substantiated, ensuring a fair and transparent process.
- 10.5.10 Conduct an annual review of the Code of Ethics and committee procedures to ensure they remain relevant and effective.
- 10.5.11 Communicate regularly with the membership to reinforce ethical standards and provide updates on committee activities.
Membership & Certification Committee responsibilities (10.6)
10.6 The Membership and Certification Committee plays a pivotal role in managing and enhancing the organization's membership structure and granting of certification. Their primary responsibilities include:
- 10.6.1 Develop strategies to attract and recruit new members, ensuring a diverse and engaged membership base.
- 10.6.2 Implement initiatives to enhance member retention, including personalized engagement, benefits, and recognition programs.
- 10.6.3 Oversee the administration of membership applications.
- 10.6.4 Oversee the conferral of the title Certified Psychosexual Therapists™.
- 10.6.5 Establish and regularly review eligibility criteria for membership and certification, reflecting the evolving needs and standards of the profession.
- 10.6.6 Streamline and manage membership and certification application processes, ensuring clarity and efficiency for applicants.
- 10.6.7 Conduct thorough reviews of certification applications, including examination of qualifications and adherence to established criteria.
- 10.6.8 Identify and provide professional development opportunities for members to support their ongoing education and certification maintenance.
- 10.6.9 Maintain regular communication with members regarding membership benefits, certification requirements, and updates.
- 10.6.10 Establish mechanisms for gathering feedback from members regarding their experiences with the membership and certification processes, making adjustments as needed.
- 10.6.11 Explore collaborations with educational institutions to promote certification programs and foster connections between students and certified professionals.
- 10.6.12 Maintain accurate and up-to-date databases of members and certified professionals, ensuring confidentiality and compliance with data protection regulations.
- 10.6.13 Develop and implement promotional strategies to increase awareness of membership benefits and the value of certification within the organization and the broader professional community.
Education Committee responsibilities (10.7)
10.7 The Education Committee is responsible for overseeing and advancing the organization's continued education initiatives. Their primary duties include:
- 10.7.1 Create comprehensive standards and criteria for educational institutions seeking accreditation as IAPST Continuing Education providers. This includes guidelines for program content, faculty qualifications, and delivery methods.
- 10.7.2 Secure accreditation for IAPST Continuing Education programs from relevant licensing boards, ensuring alignment with industry standards and regulatory requirements.
- 10.7.3 Establish and manage a rigorous accreditation review process for educational institutions, ensuring adherence to IAPST standards and the facilitation of high-quality continuing education.
- 10.7.4 Implement mechanisms for ongoing quality assurance, including periodic reviews of accredited programs to uphold standards and address any evolving educational needs.
- 10.7.5 Serve as a liaison between the Continuing Education Committee and relevant licensing boards to foster communication, collaboration, and alignment with accreditation requirements.
- 10.7.6 Collaborate with educational institutions to facilitate the integration of IAPST Continuing Education standards into their programs, promoting a culture of excellence in psychosexual therapy education.
- 10.7.7 Develop strategies to effectively promote accredited continuing education programs, enhancing their visibility among IAPST members and the broader professional community.
- 10.7.8 Maintain detailed records of the accreditation process, including documentation of standards, review outcomes, and recommendations for continuous improvement.
- 10.7.9 Engage with IAPST members to identify their continuing education needs and preferences, ensuring that accredited programs are relevant and meet the evolving demands of the field.
- 10.7.10 Establish feedback mechanisms for program participants to provide insights on the effectiveness and relevance of continuing education offerings, enabling continuous improvement.
- 10.7.11 Integrate ethical considerations into the accreditation process, ensuring that accredited programs uphold the highest ethical standards in psychosexual therapy education.
Publication Committee responsibilities (10.8)
10.8 The Publication Committee holds a central role in managing and elevating the organization's publication strategies. Their primary responsibilities include:
- 10.8.1 Provide editorial guidance and oversight for all organizational publications to ensure quality, accuracy, and adherence to established standards.
- 10.8.2 Curate and review content for publications, ensuring it aligns with the organization's mission and adds value to the members.
- 10.8.3 Take the lead in establishing and publishing the International Journal of Psychosexual Therapy (IJPT), overseeing the peer-review process and maintaining the journal's scholarly reputation.
- 10.8.4 Develop and manage a publication calendar, coordinating the release of various publications to optimize impact and engagement.
- 10.8.5 Foster relationships with authors, researchers, and contributors to encourage submissions and maintain a diverse range of perspectives in publications.
- 10.8.6 Ensure publications, including the International Journal of Psychosexual Therapy, are accessible to members and relevant stakeholders, utilizing both print and digital distribution channels.
- 10.8.7 Collaborate with other committees to align publication efforts with organizational goals and initiatives.
- 10.8.8 Regularly review and update publication policies and guidelines to reflect industry standards and ensure transparency and fairness.
- 10.8.9 Develop strategies to effectively promote publications, including the International Journal of Psychosexual Therapy, to reach a broader audience and enhance the organization's influence.
- 10.8.10 Oversee the peer-review process for submissions to the International Journal of Psychosexual Therapy, ensuring rigorous evaluation and maintaining the journal's academic integrity.
- 10.8.11 Develop and manage budgets for publication activities, ensuring responsible use of resources and financial sustainability.
- 10.8.12 Seek opportunities for continuous improvement in the publication process, including feedback mechanisms and staying abreast of evolving industry standards.
Student Committee responsibilities (10.9)
10.9 The Student Committee is tasked with the integral role of addressing the specific needs and concerns of student members within the organization. Their primary responsibilities include:
- 10.9.1 Advocate for the interests and concerns of student members, ensuring their perspectives are well-represented in organizational decisions.
- 10.9.2 Facilitate access to resources, information, and opportunities that support the academic and professional growth of student members.
- 10.9.3 Organize events, forums, or networking sessions to foster connections and collaboration among student members and professionals in the field.
- 10.9.4 Develop mentorship programs that pair students with experienced members, providing guidance and support in their educational and career journeys.
- 10.9.5 Research and advocate for scholarship opportunities or financial aid programs that benefit student members pursuing education in relevant fields.
- 10.9.6 Coordinate workshops, seminars, or webinars tailored to address the unique needs of student members and enhance their professional development.
- 10.9.7 Establish effective communication channels to keep student members informed about organizational activities, opportunities, and relevant industry news.
- 10.9.8 Facilitate the inclusion of student representatives in committees or decision-making processes to ensure their voices are heard at all organizational levels.
- 10.9.9 Develop orientation programs or materials to welcome new student members and provide them with essential information about the organization.

12.1 The rules contained in the current edition of Robert’s Rules of Order, Newly Revised shall govern the Association in all cases to which they are applicable and in which they are not inconsistent with these bylaws and any special rules of order the Association may adopt.
